Research on Women

 When reading The Big Sleep, I realised that the female characters seemed far more interesting in description of looks and personality as opposed to the male roles. The protagonist has to endure the constant lusting and mischief from the General's two daughters whilst he tries to solve the investigation. They're presence increases the story's already tense atmosphere due to their unpredictability, and in the detective's eyes, are not to be trusted. They emit good use of symbolism in that they have a certain power over the male characters: sex appeal. This can be seen as sexist, but the time it was written in was a time dominated by patriarchal ideals and so would have been looked over.
 The women of Hollywood during the 1930's are good examples of what the women described in the book look like, obviously due to the fashion period. Here are some references of famous actresses that connote with what I'm discussing:

Myrna Loy
Judy Garland
Marlene Dietrich
Carol Lombard
